Obituary: Our beloved Kevin was born Kevin Lamar Ewing on February 6, 1986, to Wanda Denise Williams and Calvin Ewing. Kevin is the oldest of the four 'Gavin boys,' Eric, James, and Emmanuel. Early on everyone knew that Kevin was special in that he loved life, learning and laughter. In his youngest years Kevin's favorite places to go were Cassell Elementary School and Small Strides Academy. Having suffered some significant hearing loss at an early age, it was not possible to quench his enthusiasm for school and socializing with the friends that he made there. We all can say that Kevin truly found his passion and heart while in high school at Morgan Park. Words are not enough to describe his school spirit and devotion to his academic and extracurricular pursuits. He was a true Mustang! Morgan Park High School was the place where he was able to level the playing field in every aspect. English Literature was his favorite subject. It was there that he found his creative outlet in writing poetry. He also loved sports. Kevin wanted to do whatever he had to do to be the best student athlete that he could be. Making the football and track teams were perhaps two of the greatest highlights of his life. He would lift weights to make his body strong and muscular just as he studied every night to make his mind strong. Kevin would often compare himself to his uncles, making note that his arms or chest were bigger than theirs and would encourage them to work out so that they wouldn't get fat. Kevin accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at the Jordan Baptist Church, another of his favorite places to be. Kevin looked at the best in his friends and family and tried to be like them, from laughing the loudest and telling the funniest stories with his brothers, to trying to be a 'true athlete like his Aunt Pat.' With his courageous heart and smile Kevin inspired all of us to be more than ordinary... to be overcomers. Kevin left this life to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 4, 2003. He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Wanda Williams; father, Calvin Ewing; grandmother and adoptive mother, Robbie Gavin; grandfather, James Williams; three brothers, Eric Gavin, James Gavin, and Emmanuel Gavin; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
